Sorry for the traffic, I just "upgraded" to debian testing and
php-curl works like a charm using SSL, it was a package problem
aparently.

Only the experience remains.

I used a simple https://localhost/ connection using php-curl over
apache2, and apache child crashed, not the server, only the child
running the script.
