Ben,
Could it be a path definition issue? It seems like you are connecting and the error is when you try to store the returned data(?). I had similar unending trials tring to open a file to store verbose output on my remote server.
Sorry that I can't be further help & I know how frustrating the search for solution must be.

I'll post the contents of the log files below, but what could be the difference. Is there some global curl setting that could get in the way. From the contents of the log file it looks like curl is failing at trying to get the data returned from the request. In both cases CURLOPT_TIMEOUT is set to 30. My dev server is my macbook pro with apache 2. The live server is a shared host.
