Well, as Patrick showed, your problem is easily reproducable if you A) don't
enable SSL or B) you do enable it with an option but don't have SSL enabled in
your libcurl.

The B) part at least will cause curl_easy_setopt() to return an error in the
next version but it didn't used to.

If it's neither A nor B, then I think you need to roll up your sleeves and
start debugging this.
