segmentation fault when invalid url

Hi,
I am using curl-7.9.3.If the URL is invalid and doesn't contain 'http' or 'ftp'.
foe e.g. if the url is "NULLxyz.txt" ,definitely it is invalid.But it seems that libcurl behaves differently for above URL in Windows and in linux.
In Windows it gives error message like host not found or something like that but for linux in gives segmentation fault.
Can you please help me to avoid this segmentation fault.
