I tried v2.57 of autoconf.

Do you have any suggestions how I could short circuit configure to build
it manually?

checking for inet_addr... yes

Just a slightly asside comment - while getting something else to
configure/compile on IPF (Itanium) and HP-UX 11.22 (with the HP
compiler), it came to light that at higher levels of optimization, the
dead code elimination of the compiler would eliminate the "unused
assignment" of the function pointers used to check for some functions.
This meant that the "test" returned a false positive. The fix was in a
newer version of autoconf. The workaround was to keep the optimization
level low.
