daniel, have you checked poslib out ? it is the base library of a dns
server and looks pretty complete. It has both basic (sendmessage,
parsemessage) and high-level (resolve 1 or more hosts) function and is
portable. http://www.posadis.org/poslib/

caveat:
it's in C++ :)
it should be pretty easy to write a wrapper around it though (i already
have one if you're interested).

otoh i have to admit i didnt check libdenise out :|
