Another possibility is
ftp://athena-dist.mit.edu/pub/ATHENA/ares/ares-1.1.1.tar.gz

It has an MIT-style license (go figure) and works basically like the
multi interface in curl (you ask it to fill in some fdsets, and then
call ares_process() when they're ready). Doesn't do IPv6 though.
