automake version

I'm trying to run "reconf" on curl CVS. With automake 1.6.3, I get:

[shantonu_at_Macintosh]$ automake-1.6
lib/Makefile.am:24: LDFLAGS must be set with `=' before using `+='
/usr/share/automake-1.6/am/compile.am: LDFLAGS was set with `+=' and is
now set with `='
lib/Makefile.am: required file `./depcomp' not found

With automake 1.7.7, I get:
[shantonu_at_Macintosh]$ aclocal-1.7 -I .
aclocal: configure.ac: 67: macro `AM_PROG_LIBTOOL' not found in library
[shantonu_at_Macintosh]$ automake-1.7
configure.ac:28: version mismatch. This is Automake 1.7.7,
configure.ac:28: but the definition used by this AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
configure.ac:28: comes from Automake 1.6.3. You should recreate
configure.ac:28: aclocal.m4 with aclocal and run automake again.
lib/Makefile.am: required file `./depcomp' not found
/opt/dp/share/automake-1.7/am/depend2.am: am__fastdepCC does not appear
in AM_CONDITIONAL
/opt/dp/share/automake-1.7/am/depend2.am: am__fastdepCC does not appear
in AM_CONDITIONAL
/opt/dp/share/automake-1.7/am/depend2.am: am__fastdepCC does not appear
in AM_CONDITIONAL
/opt/dp/share/automake-1.7/am/depend2.am: am__fastdepCC does not appear
in AM_CONDITIONAL

What version of automake should I be using?

Shantonu
