There is a draft:

sftp is also "Simple FTP" RFC-913, but never tried that.

OpenSSH seems very BSD/Unix centric. For Win/MAC there is
Mssh http://cs.mscd.edu/MSSH/index.html

Not sure if they have a similar shared API. I'll check it out.
