The very frequent lines like

... puzzles me. What are those (for)? Could they possibly mess things up for
libcurl?

In my view, it looks like it is doing right all the way to the TCP connect()
call getting -1 (EINPROGRESS) back, but then for some reason the connection
doesn't seem to complete.
