Well, if they would be used by other files then I too would like them there,
but until then I rather see them static. I'm not a believer in creating things
for a possible future use now, I rather write good code now and move it to the
generic case later on if we find the need to.

Well, my shorter one is simpler to read but slightly slower to execute for the
fd > slots_num case. But quite possibly the difference is too small to
actually get noticed.

Yes, sure, but only if you rebuild the lib and the vast majority of all
libcurl users use a pre-built or at least an already-built binary. Besides,
even if you do a custom build, you may want a library that adapts fine for
both the little use as well as the execessive amount of connections case.
