problems with multi interface when using ssl and proxy

Anybody encountered any difficulties trying to use a proxy with a https
request
and the libcurl multi-interface? I have tried using the easy interface
and that works ok.
The problem with the multi interface is that curl_multi_fdset returns a
less than zero value for max_fd
which if subsequently used results in a select error.
