Well, the documentation applies to the latest version of libcurl.
You're using a version that I think is over a year old, thus I
wouldn't say that the notice in the documentation is misleading. This
is however just my personal opinion, and I'm not in any way in the
position of deciding what should be added to the documentation and
not.
