Thanks for your contribution and help!

The patch had several problems, but I liked the general idea so much I took
the liberty of massaging it into something that seems to work as it should and
I added a test case to verify the basics too.

The attached patch is what I ended up with, and unless someone has objections
I will merge this into master tomorrow or so.

Feel free to give it a spin and see that it still works the way you wanted it
to! It is based on the current git repo code.
