The dot is inserted via the dump function for CURLOPT_DEBUGFUNCTION

fprintf(stream, "%c",
               (ptr[i+c]>=0x20) && (ptr[i+c]<0x80)?ptr[i+c]:'.');

Maybe the problem is not related to dot stuffing after all

I still don't understand why the dump puts where the message is
getting corrupted.
