You seem to be correct. I liked against the Ubuntu stock OpenSSL:

OpenSSL 0.9.8o 01 Jun 2010

When I manually built openssl 1.0.0f, built curl against 1.0.0f and
rerun without the patch, no memory leak occured. So apparently this is a
known and fixed issue in OpenSSL. Which sucks, since I cannot change
OpenSSL in production easily... :-/

Could there be any possible workaround besides leaking memory and
terminating every so often to clean it all up?
