Note that the OP refers to using "gcc" and running "configure" to
produce the makefile.
I'm not sure how the thread on social.msdn.microsoft.com would relate to this.
But yes, a "hard-coded" makefile would (obviously) need to be "hard-edited."

Which is what makes symlink strategy used by ccache so nice, you can
choose which
compiler is used simply by adjusting the $PATH.
