I've asked on SO [1], but I'm not sure any of the suggestions can be
used with curl.

Elsewhere [2], someone suggested using socketpair() insteadof pipe()
when setting up the tunnel child process. Is it possible to pass an
AF_LOCAL socket (instead of an AF_INET one) to libcurl?
