If it helps, here's what proftpd's configure script does, to detect
whether -ldl is needed, in its configure script:

      AC_MSG_CHECKING([whether linking with OpenSSL functions requires
-ldl])
      LIBS="-lcrypto -ldl $LIBS"
      AC_TRY_LINK(
        [
          #include <openssl/evp.h>
        ],
        [
          SSLeay_add_all_algorithms();
        ],
        [
          AC_MSG_RESULT(yes)
          LIBS="$saved_libs -ldl"
        ],
        [
          AC_MSG_RESULT(no)
          LIBS="$saved_libs"
        ]
      )

It may not be entirely accurate, but it's been sufficient enough to avoid
these types of configure errors for a while.

Cheers,
TJ
