I have indeed, told my friend to ask their webhost to upgrade libcurl.

I could spot at least one mentioned change that could very well be the
reason you see this (dated August 5, 2003).

Since this clearly works in more recent versions, I won't be spending time
on figuring out why it failed back in the old days.
