I am receiving an error message with posting to a ssl protected URL

SSL certificate problem, verify that the CA cert is OK. Details:
error:14090086:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE:certificate
verify failed

When I checked the cert on the URL using a browser it appeared to be
correct. What issues are there with CURL and SSL that could cause this
type of problem if the server is configured correctly?
