I'm not entirely up on autoconf revisions, but hunting around on the gnu
site seems to imply that your autoconf is up-to-date.

Sadly no. And I'm not certain that the dead code thing is even
involved. I myself (as you might guess) tend to use the HP compilers,
not gcc.
