Yes, the TELNET implementation has always had this limitation and it has
always been considered bad and subject for fixing in the future.

TELNET is also not possible to use with the multi interface and it doesn't
really fit into the push/pull concept of current libcurl very nice (see TODO
items on the issue).

Summary: libcurl's telnet support needs work to become a well-behaving citizen
in multi protocol land.
