HAVE_CURL_MULTI_SOCKET doesn't have any real effect on the current CVS code.

Yes. I've been wanting to do things the CURL_MULTIEASY way, but I've not yet
been able to spend the necessary time and effort to make that happen. Thus,
the code remains like this with a few test cases failing if you build with
that define set.

Those failures also show shortcomings in the multi interface.
