Remember, curl is mainly focused on file transfers. Therefore, when
doing FTP transfers, you don't do it the usual way, by connecting first.
You are supposed to specify the file to be transferred in the URL, then
curl does the entire procedure in one go. It connects, authenticates, CD
to the appropriate directory (according to the URL) and performs the
transfer.

When you enter a URL that is a directory, curl assumes that you want a
directory listing and not a file, that is why you see the listing.
