Curl_fillreadbuffer lacks useful failf() for CURLE_READ_ERROR case.

Granted this is user error in your callback for returning a negative or too-large value if you get to that point, so marking "new feature request."

It's possible this may be what happened on to some other user: http://curl.haxx.se/mail/curlphp-2008-02/0030.html - that's the only messaging you get right now, which isn't at all helpful.
