Why does it use SSLv2 here? That's a big diff compared to the browser approach
that used SSLv3.

Nope. It would be interesting to know what the server/OpenSSL does when that 5
second thing happens.

Many people use HTTPS with curl every day, and I've never seen any such 5+
seconds reports before. This is something odd going on.
