Not sure what prints this message normally, but:

$ cat alarm.c
int main(){for(;;);}
$ gcc -o alarm alarm.c
$ ./alarm

Then in another terminal:
$ kill -ALRM `pidof alarm`

In the original terminal:

Alarm clock
$

So I think his program is using the default signal handler for the ALRM signal.
