I found the answer to my question
here:

although, this document seems to be different from the one
found on the main curl website
here:
    http://curl.haxx.se/libcurl/c/curl_easy_setopt.html

does this mean the documentation from the first site i meantioned is out
of date
or that the documents on curl.haxx.se are out of date, or better yet
the lastest version of curl does support this option in multithread unix
applications :)
