OpenSSL have always AFAIK been bit-length agnostic when it comes to the
public key algorithms so I would say that they supported 4096-bit RSA from
the first public release which is probably why you are having a hard time
finding any information on it since they never made a changelog entry with
"added support for 4096 rsa".

Looking at the source code for 0.9.6 (oldes one available from their site,
0.9.1 was their first public release) a quick glance at crypto/rsa.c tells
me that it was length agnostic.
